(UAV) Training -Use of drones in agriculture, forestry and urban planning

General description

Also known as unmanned systems (UAS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), drones are well known for their military uses. Although their use during military conflicts continues to attract much criticism, in recent years, public perception of drones has shifted due to their potential use for the good. Indeed, UAVs are used in many fields such as agriculture, humanitarian interventions, e-commerce, mapping, urban planning, natural resource management, etc. 

Designed as a series of practical exercises, this training will introduce participants to “The use of UAVs in agriculture, forestry and urban planning”. Participants are encouraged to take notes especially during the group’s work.

Photogrammetric UAV Pilot Training

The Photogrammetric UAV Pilot Training allows you to learn flight techniques to collect photogrammetric data for agriculture, forestry and urban planning. It allows you to understand and analyze the photogrammetric data collected and to provide deliverables for your customers.

Objectives

Participants will acquire the necessary skills to use a drone, collect and analyze data collected by the drone. They will work on a project that will consist in developing a program using drones to respond to concrete problems encountered by farmers with UAVs and Open Source software. 

The objective is to expose participants to a wide range of tools that allow them to conduct UAV missions without using more expensive conventional options such as ARCGIS for software, and the use of aircraft.

At the end of the training, participants will acquire practical knowledge about:

  • How to fly safely and responsibly with different UAV platforms (fixed wings and multirotors).
  • How to choose the best sensor and platform for their operations and missions?
  • How to collect, manage and analyze data collected with UAVs for use in agriculture, forestry and urban planning.
  • How to design and implement UAV programs at their workplace for participants from companies.
  • How to process and interpret images (multispectral and RGB) Understand the NDVI, NDRE, LAI, CAB indices and understand the relationship with plant conditions
  • The relationship between GIS applications and drones
  • Participants will learn more about 
    • The Airspace System and safety
    • Operating Limits (height, speed, visibility and cloud clearance)
    • Weather and meteorology (winds, air masses, METAR and TAF reports)
    • Flight operations, including the pre-flight checklist, basic principles of UAV flight, dangerous flight operations, emergency operations, and loss of link procedures.
    • LiPo batteries, UAS charging and performance,
    • UAS Maintenance and Inspection.

Duration of Training

  • 5 days of training (2 days Theory & 3 days Practice)
