Introduction training to UAV mapping operations

Objective

This is a 3-day intensive course that covers all aspects of professional map drone operation, from mission planning to final map. Participants will learn both the theory and practice of the UAV mapping operation and participate in a group exercise to examine real-life case scenarios.

Theory of UAV mapping (Module 1)

  • 4 Pillars of UAV operation
  • Presentation of DJI Phantom 4 
  • Discover your equipment
  • Basic operations and security checks
  • Software functions / Applications

Mission planning (Module 2)

  • Mission Preparation Template 
  • Work with checklists and standard operating procedures
  • Basic weather and environmental considerations
  • Customs clearance and compliance
  • Risk assessment
  • Preparation for takeoff and landing
  • Autonomous flight planning

Group exercise (Module 3)

  • Plan your own mission. Based on the use cases brought by other students, you will plan your own mission.

Presentation of the group

  • Presentation of the mission plan to the group and discussion 

Practical (Module 4)

  • Each participant creates an autonomous flight plan using the Pix4D capture
  • Each participant reviews the mission plan and preparation
  • Each participant reviews the weather and checklist.
  • Each participant decides on a data collection plan and takes note of it.

Flight Practice Part I/Part II (Module 5)

  • Participants carry out risk assessment and learn about the different roles (pilot-in-command, observer, operator). 
  • Participants make a mapping flight, transfer data and perform field processing using the Pix4D fields.

  • Data management and processing
  • Download and data processing
  • Installation of Pix4Dmapper and Pix4Dfields software and import of data sets 
  • Adjustment of processing parameters

Data management (Module 7)

  1. Data management
    • File management (project plan, logs, raw data, outputs)
    • File formats, backup and storage management
    • Large projects and data strategy
  2. Data analysis:
    • Analysis software for drone data
    • Introduction to drone data analysis tools (GIS)
    • Tool selection and workflow

3 days of training (2 days Theory & 1-day data collection & Practice)
