Training Courses

The Theoretical Competence Course is a three days course. The core content is specified by the CAA and aims to cover the aspects of airmanship that are most important when operating drones in UK airspace. As all our instructors are, or have been, commercial operators we are able to tailor the course to highlight the factors that are most important from an operational or safety perspective. We try to build in case studies and examples that are relevant to each group of candidates.

Theoretical course

Here is the standard agenda for the Theoretical Competence Course:

Module 1         Aircraft Knowledge

Module 2         Airmanship and Aviation Safety

Module 3         UAS Airspace Operating Principles

Module 4         Air Law

Module 5         Meteorology

Module 6         Navigation and Charts

Module 7         Human Factors

Module 8         Operating Procedures

You will complete 8 short module tests over the three days. We will also introduce you to the Operations Manual and ensure you have a full understanding of how it is written, why it is necessary and how to use it during operations.

The Operational Assessment will follow after this and is not just a flight test but a demonstration that a safe operation can be undertaken.

Operational assessment

During the Operational Assessment you will be expected to use and complete the appropriate paperwork as if it was a genuine operation. You will be assessed on your preparation and procedures as well as your flying.

5 days of training (2 days Theory & 3 days Practice) Theory and Flight Exam.
